Course Description

Program Description Literature speaks for the diversity of human experience. In studying English Literature, you will encounter the immense range of that experience as expressed across many historic periods and cultures, from Anglo-Saxon oral tradition through to contemporary writing in English from around the world. Provides the opportunity to expand and refine critical skills and cultural awareness, oral and written communication, and knowledge of critical inquiry Includes courses in British, Canadian, American and world literatures in English as well as composition, rhetoric, and textual/ cultural studies Teaches analytical and critical-thinking skills Provides experience in research, creative writing, digital editing and publishing, and teaching Writing is central to all English courses. You will discover the power of language and develop your own skills of research, analysis, organization, and expression. You will learn to read perceptively, opening your mind to other viewpoints and experiences. In your courses from first year on, you will work closely with some of the world’s leading scholars in areas such as gender studies, modern British literature, Gothic studies, American literature, Renaissance studies, and composition pedagogy. Opportunities for effective readers and communicators abound. English is an excellent “passport degree” given the foundation it provides for careers in education, law, politics, publishing, communications, journalism, management, public relations, advertising, library science, and writing, from technical to creative. Today’s employers are looking for people with effective communication skills, cultural knowledge, and analytic ability, in combination with the specific training we offer, such as web-based editing, writing, and publishing.
