Expert Tips

Score 79+ Strategy Guide

Proven strategies from 4,500+ students coached. Click any tip to expand detailed do's and don'ts for PTE Academic.

1
Read Aloud = Triple Score Impact
Speaking
Read Aloud contributes to Speaking, Reading AND Pronunciation scores simultaneously. It's the highest-impact task in the entire PTE exam.
Do: Use the 30–40 second preparation time to silently read the passage and identify difficult words.
Do: Maintain a steady pace — pause at commas and full stops naturally. Don't rush.
Don't: Go back and re-read a word if you mispronounce it — keep moving forward.
Don't: Whisper or speak too softly — the microphone needs clear, confident audio.

2
Write from Dictation = Highest Point Value
Listening
Each Write from Dictation sentence is worth up to 12+ points — the most points per item in PTE. Getting these right can make or break your score.
Do: Write the first letter of each word as you hear the sentence, then fill in complete words after.
Do: Focus on getting every single word — partial credit is given for each correct word.
Don't: Try to understand meaning first — just capture every word accurately, meaning doesn't matter here.
Don't: Ignore spelling — "goverment" instead of "government" costs you the point for that word.

3
Repeat Sentence — Short-Term Memory Hack
Speaking
You hear a sentence once and must repeat it exactly. This tests oral fluency, pronunciation, and listening simultaneously. The #2 most important PTE task.
Do: Shadow the speaker in your head as they talk — mimic their rhythm and intonation mentally.
Do: Start speaking within 2 seconds of the audio ending — confidence matters more than perfection.
Don't: Try to write it down — you'll lose the audio rhythm and stumble when speaking.
Don't: Stop mid-sentence even if you forget a word — say something to maintain oral fluency score.

4
Re-order Paragraphs — Find the Topic Sentence
Reading
This is the trickiest Reading task. Look for the sentence with no pronoun references (he, she, they, this) — that's usually the first sentence.
Do: Find the sentence that introduces a new topic with no backward references — it goes first.
Do: Track pronouns and connectors (however, therefore, moreover) to chain sentences logically.
Don't: Spend more than 2.5 minutes per item — move on if stuck and come back later.
Don't: Guess randomly — wrong order gives negative marks. Only arrange what you're confident about.

5
Essay — Template Strategy for 79+
Writing
PTE essays are AI-scored. A well-structured template with proper grammar and vocabulary scores consistently high. Aim for 200–300 words.
Do: Use a 4-paragraph template: Introduction (paraphrase topic), Body 1, Body 2, Conclusion.
Do: Include 2–3 complex sentence structures per paragraph (relative clauses, conditionals, passive voice).
Don't: Write under 200 or over 300 words — the sweet spot is 250–280 words.
Don't: Use informal language or contractions (don't, can't) — keep it academic throughout.

6
Microphone & Computer Readiness
General
PTE is 100% computer-based — your typing speed, microphone technique, and test centre noise all affect your score. Practice on a computer, not paper.
Do: Practice with a headset microphone — speak 4–6 inches from the mic at consistent volume.
Do: Aim for 40+ WPM typing speed — Summarize Written Text and Essay are timed and typed.
Don't: Get distracted by other test-takers' audio — wear your headset and stay focused on your screen.
Don't: Click "Next" before reviewing — unlike IELTS, you can't go back to previous questions in PTE.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Punjab students ask about PTE Academic. Click any question to see the answer.

Is PTE easier than IELTS?
It depends on your strengths. PTE is better if you're comfortable with computers, have good typing speed, and prefer AI scoring over human examiners. Many Indian students find Speaking easier in PTE because there's no face-to-face interview pressure. However, Reading can be trickier due to Re-order Paragraphs. At Red Star, we help you decide which test suits you best after a free diagnostic assessment.
What is a good PTE score for Australia PR?
For Australian PR, you need minimum 65 in each section for "Competent English" (equivalent to IELTS 7.0 each). For maximum points (20 bonus points under skilled migration), you need 79+ in each section (equivalent to IELTS 8.0+). Most successful PR applicants aim for 79+ as it significantly boosts CRS-equivalent points.
How long is the PTE score valid?
PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years from the test date — same as IELTS. For Australian immigration, scores must be valid at the time of visa application and decision. Plan your test date accordingly to ensure validity throughout your application process.
What is the PTE exam fee in India?
PTE Academic costs approximately ₹17,000 – ₹18,000 (around $205 USD) in India as of 2026. This is slightly more than IELTS Academic (₹16,250) but PTE includes unlimited free score sends to universities, which can save significant money if applying to multiple institutions.
Is PTE accepted for Canada Express Entry?
Yes! As of November 2023, IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) officially accepts PTE Academic for all Canadian immigration programs including Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and Study Permits. PTE is now on equal footing with IELTS for Canadian immigration.
Can I take PTE at home or only at test centres?
PTE Academic must be taken at an authorized Pearson test centre. In Punjab, the nearest centres are in Chandigarh, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana. Unlike some tests, PTE does not currently offer a home edition for the Academic version. Red Star helps with test centre booking and logistics.
How many times can I take PTE?
There is no limit on the number of times you can take PTE Academic. You can retake it as soon as 5 calendar days after your previous test. Your scores from each attempt are independent — universities and immigration authorities only see the scores you choose to send.
Does Red Star offer PTE coaching?
Yes! Red Star Immigration offers comprehensive PTE Academic coaching at our Sangrur and Patiala centres. Our program includes: AI-based practice software with real PTE interface, daily speaking and writing practice sessions, weekly full mock tests with score analysis, one-on-one pronunciation coaching, and template strategies for 79+ scores.
