Course Description

Program Description This one-year Ontario College Certificate program prepares students to apply principles of infection prevention and proper handling in the decontamination, inspection, assembly, sterilization and storage of reusable patient care equipment and instrumentation in healthcare settings. This unique program offers a combination of theory, lab practice, simulation and clinical experience. Students explore concepts of working in a healthcare environment including basic human anatomy, medical terminology, patient interventions and employee and patient safety. Focus is on team communication and customer service. Students gain manual dexterity by practising with patient equipment and surgical instrumentation in simulation labs and operate reprocessing equipment in clinical healthcare settings. Graduates may seek employment opportunities in healthcare facilities, such as hospital medical device reprocessing departments, public and private endoscopic clinics, dental clinics and surgical-centres. Algonquin’s Introduction to Canadian Health Studies (ICHS) is designed to help international students integrate into the Canadian context in health studies, be more successful in their program, as well as their future employment. This introduction is offered to students with a conditional acceptance to all health studies at Algonquin College, and will not address program-specific content. International applicants who meet the program eligibility requirements are required to complete preparatory courses (4-months in duration): Introduction to Canadian Health Studies (ICHS). Students who successfully complete the introduction will then proceed to their original health program of choice.
