Program Description
The Community and Justice Services program is designed to prepare students for a rewarding and successful career in the private, non-profit, and public sectors of justice services and community corrections. This four-semester program adapts to the changing needs of residential, community, and institutional settings to prepare students for employment in this diverse field. The program offers a strong complement of interview, security, safety, case management, communications, facilitation, and therapeutic intervention skills to prepare students to develop constructive working relationships with hard to serve populations, persons at risk for being in conflict with the law, offenders in the community, and inmates in our institutions. All students begin their first semester with a three-day training experience at Wendigo Lake Expeditions, a youth open custody program that uses adventure and wilderness therapy to initiate positive change in clients. At Wendigo Lake, students experience hands-on activities designed to develop their team-building, facilitation, and leadership skills. This experience is the first introduction of youth-centered justice services with classes in the remaining semesters effectively comparing and contrasting the unique needs, challenges, and care of at-risk youth, young offenders, and adults.
