Course Description

Program Description This two-year Ontario College Diploma program delivered in a condensed format over 45 weeks prepares students for entry into a wide range of careers in the heavy equipment repair and service industry. Through a balanced combination of theoretical, hands-on technical training and essential skills, students develop the knowledge required to meet the challenges of employment in both the service and repair fields within the sector. Algonquin has recently made great investment into a modern training facility, the Transportation Technology Centre. With access to the new and current equipment, students gain a full range of advanced technology involved in today`s diesel equipment and truck industries. Through a practical-based curriculum, student develop a diversity of skills and knowledge in relation to shop procedures, vehicle maintenance and the operational principles of systems common to most diesel equipment and trucks, which are reinforced in applied hands-on projects. Students also study chassis and drivelines, fuel and electrical systems, internal combustion engines, as well as diagnostics and troubleshooting procedures. The curriculum has been designed to align with the existing provincial apprenticeship competencies. Graduates are well-prepared to challenge the Ontario Ministry of Training Colleges and Universities exemption exams for Commercial Vehicle and Equipment (Level 1 Powered Lift Truck, Farm, Heavy Equipment and Truck Apprenticeships) and Level 2 Truck and Coach Technician Apprenticeship. Graduates interested in pursuing Red Seal provincial recognition may also elect to further prepare for those examinations. Graduates may find employment in private and public organizations in the heavy truck and coach, agriculture, forest and mineral harvesting, construction and related diesel equipment fields.
