Program Description There are countless reasons to study biology in university. Having a fundamental understanding of biology will provide you with the necessary skills needed to succeed in life and is a great investment to your future career. Plus the journey along the way can be quite fun! Here are some reasons why you should consider studying biology.
Biology is the most mysterious discipline left on the planet. Scientists estimate that there are between five and 40 million species on the earth. At the present time, scientists have identified between one and two million species, meaning that there are still as many as 38 million species to be identified! Regardless of the actual number of species existing on earth, the reality is that we are only aware of less than half of the species on this earth.
Students in the biology program have the opportunity to volunteer and/or work with our dedicated faculty conducting scientific research. Our five full-time faculty members hire approximately 10 students each summer and many more volunteer or take Work Study positions working with faculty during the fall and winter semesters.
Many of these students have the opportunity to co-author peer-reviewed publications that they work on with faculty. Our faculty have set up our research programs to produce these opportunities because they believe it is a wonderful complement to their regular studies.
