Lethbridge, Alberta, CA Program Description What is Urban and Regional Studies? Urban and Regional Studies is a field that provides students with a broad range of conceptual and practical tools to understand cities and regions. Cities and regions are changing rapidly in ways that we could not have imagined only a few decades ago! Once a ""buffalo commons,"" later a red light district, an auto wrecker's yard and now protected as an urban nature reserve, ""the point"" where these students are standing illustrates land use dynamics on the edge of Lethbridge's downtown area. To understand these changes and formulate successful policy responses, we need to draw upon all of the social sciences to describe urban and regional change and predict development trajectories.
Urban and Regional Studies approaches contemporary development problems at different scales and from different points of view. Issues include the evolving social, ethnic, and architectural character of urban neighbourhoods; the decline of traditional agricultural service centres in Canada's Prairie west; or the governance challenges of sprawling metropolitan areas. The major in Urban and Regional Studies is housed in the Department of Geography but draws upon a wide range of social science disciplines. The required core courses provide an intellectual foundation in the key disciplines of Urban and Regional Studies and an introduction to key research methods for urban and regional problems.
