Program Description This flexible, multidisciplinary three-year degree involves a generalized study of a broad range of subjects, and allows you to tailor your studies to your interests and career plans. Students in International Development acquire knowledge and develop skills in the social sciences and related disciplines with a focus on international development issues and content. Multi- and interdisciplinary skills are increasingly required by governments, business, non-governmental organizations, and other agencies in the public and private sector who work to develop policies and build partnerships with countries around the world. Skills that are in demand by employers include strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills, flexibility and adaptability, and superior oral and written communication skills. A working fluency in more than one language is increasingly essential for work in Canada and in other countries. International Development students can acquire all of these skills by taking advantage of the rich opportunities available to them at the University of Guelph. The nature of the IDS program encourages students to think and develop these skills in various disciplinary contexts and across the disciplines, making them highly adaptable to different employment situations. The program brings together expertise and resources from a wide range of departments and schools at the University of Guelph, from the social sciences (geography, economics, political science, sociology and anthropology), to history, languages, agriculture and the natural sciences. Reflecting on the University's mission as a research-intensive and learner-centred institution, faculty members who teach courses in IDS are actively involved in research across the globe and bring their international experience to the classroom.
