Course Description

Program Description UTP Stage I: FIC is designed to prepare you for entry to university-level programs in Business Administration, Computing Science, Engineering Science or Arts and Social Sciences. In UTP Stage I you complete eight courses. After successfully completing this program you will progress to UTP Stage II. UTP Stage II: Health Sciences (BSc) provides first-year courses and the foundation for progression to the second year of SFU's Faculty of Health Sciences. Programs in the Health Sciences combine scientific inquiry with social and behavioural research to examine the underlying causes of health and disease and the factors that influence population health. This program is meant for students with a minimum of a Grade 11 education or equivalent and an IELTS overall score of 5.5 with no band less than 4.5 and TOEFL overall score of 59 and a minimum score of 12 in Reading and Writing, that would like to pursue a post-secondary education at Simon Fraser University. The program begins with an 8-month foundational program, including a mandatory English literacy course, followed by 12 months of a faculty-specialized academic program equivalent to the first year of university at SFU. Admission into the Simon Fraser University is not guaranteed - students must meet progression requirements as well as any program-specific entry requirements highlighted by the the University in order to gain admission. The BSc in Health Sciences will be of interest to students wishing to pursue careers that require detailed knowledge of the cellular, molecular and behavioural mechanisms that underlie health and disease, as well as to students who are considering post-graduate studies in applied health research and professional health programs. Topics include: Social, environmental, behavioural, and biological determinants of health Measurement of health, illness, and disease, as well as genetics General biology, cellular, biology, and molecular biology General chemistry and biochemistry Pathophysiology, toxicology, epidemiology Virology and immunology Bioethics Statistics and research methods (qualitative and quantitative) Health promotion and disease prevention Health policy and health care systems Evidence-based decision making Health technology
