Program Description Sheridan’s Social Service Worker – Gerontology program will help you develop the skills and expertise to become a leader in the field of gerontology. This gerontology training will prepare you to help meet the needs of Ontario’s older adults who are expected to number over three million within the next 20 years. The program uses an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) framework to analyze issues of the oppression and power in the social work field. Therefore, success in the program requires you to also be open to the specific contexts and issues of older adults from different racial, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The program emphasizes the importance of cultural competence and preparation to work with a diverse population of older adults and their families.
