Course Description

Program Description Program Highlights: Besides your classroom sessions learning the theory and skills needed for hands-on work, you'll spend a significant amount of time in fish and wildlife laboratory work, and participate in numerous excursions into the field. In 3rd semester, you will rotate through Fisheries, Wildlife, Habitat, Wetland, and Freshwater Ecology Field Schools. These field schools will introduce new skills such as: boat handling, applying the use of GPS units, fish netting, sampling and tagging, as well as working under standardized protocols for habitat assessment, wetland classification, bird banding, and use of wildlife monitoring technologies. Through these field school activities, students will work together to collect, analyze and present the data over the remainder of the technician-level education and training. During field excursions you will practice fisheries management skills and learn about the logistics involved in the design and implementation of field projects, including wading in moving water while wearing a backpack. You will also be spending considerable time in the wild learning plant, bird and mammal identification skills, remote sensing such as tracking animals over rough terrain, and conducting wildlife observations in all weather conditions, including rain, deep snow, and extreme temperatures. Please Note: Students starting in January are required to attend classes over the summer semester.
