Program Description Humber’s Media Foundation certificate program is designed to help you develop foundational knowledge and ability in digital media, communications, writing, design, and academic skills, preparing you for further study in advanced media programs at Humber’s School of Media Studies. Your media training, and in-studio work in foundational media arts, will thoroughly ground you in theoretical and practical approaches.
As you explore the varied and ever-growing field of contemporary media, you will be introduced to a wide variety of subjects such as visual literacy, film studies, photography, web design and digital design. In your second and final semester, you will be able to build an area of focus, choosing from subjects such as script writing, audio and video editing, television studio production, image capture, and media design. You will learn contemporary technical skills using industry-standard software on PC and Mac platforms to develop websites using HTML and script-based languages; work with images using Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign; and tell visual stories using Premiere Pro and Audition.
This program is designed with input from industry partners, ensuring it remains leading edge, and is taught by faculty with strong industry connections and experience, who will give you valuable insights into the trends and realities of the media landscape. In this program, you will gain an understanding of what it is like to work in different sectors of the mass media industry, helping you develop a career focus and preparing you for success in the workplace.
A career in media can take you in many directions: video production, journalism, public relations, interactive media, advertising, and digital design and imaging. Our program allows you to experience all these possibilities and will help you decide where you want to go next. In your second semester, you will choose electives that will provide you with more advanced training and help you prepare for your next step – then we’ll help you apply to other programs that will lead you to your media career of choice. Our goal is to set you up for success.
