Program Description Humber’s Bachelor of Health Sciences – Workplace Health and Wellness degree program will provide you with specialized education in the workplace health and wellness field. You will explore various specialized areas including the most current developments in evidence-informed, interprofessional practice within a business-oriented framework. A team approach to service is emphasized. This program is multi-disciplinary in nature drawing from the fields of public health, leadership, interprofessional practice, human resource management, occupational health and safety, disability management, communications, project management, and knowledge translation. You will acquire the competencies to deliver proactive, responsive, profitable, and effective workplace health and wellness services within organizational settings while promoting healthy lifestyles to individual employees and, by extension, their families. Principles of equity, effective change management, diversity, ethical and legal practices, and knowledge translation are the foundation of your learning.
Students will participate in one mandatory paid/unpaid work placement to gain 14 weeks of full-time professional work experience. This experience will enhance the theoretical learning in the program and assist students in gaining the hands-on skills required to be successful in this industry. Students will have a number of work-related responsibilities assigned to them and take on opportunities to create, publish or assist with administrative duties. The placement will take place in a variety of business settings such as profit or not-for-profit enterprises, health and wellness consulting firms, governmental or educational institutions, or other health and wellness businesses.
Three-quarters of Canada’s top employers have existing health and wellness programs, and there are growing indications that organizations who do not address this important facet of their business will be less likely to attract and retain the key talent to sustain their enterprises. Graduates may find good employment prospects for health and wellness positions in an array of workplaces including for-profit, not-for-profit and public service organizations. Possible employment opportunities include working as an entrepreneur in the workplace health and wellness industry or working as a member of a health and wellness team within private (i.e., corporate wellness programs) and publicly funded programs (i.e., public health).
