The Wellington Institute of Technology (WelTec) was established in the year 1904 as Hutt Valley Polytechnic and got its current name in 2001. It is among the oldest tertiary education institutions in New Zealand but has evolved with time to incorporate modern practices while maintaining its focus on teaching real skills. There are 134 programs offered by WelTec that are available to the 8,000 students that study at the institute. The programs are categorized into various fields including business, construction, creative, engineering, health and social services, hospitality, and information technology.

WelTec has campuses in Petone, Porirua, and Wellington. The institute’s main campus is located in Petone and has all the facilities that students would need. There is a well-stocked library, the Dynamics Gym, Centrestage hairdressing salon, a sports field, and a café. Students can also make use of the free bus service that connects Petone to Porirua and Wellington. The campus is divided into several blocks, including one with a childcare center. They also have an ability support team that is dedicated to helping students with learning disabilities. Petone itself is a happening suburb dotted with bars, restaurants, and cafes, as well as easy access to Wellington city. Some of the popular attractions in Petone include Remutaka Cycle Trail, Petone Settlers Museum and Light House Cinema.

With around 8,000 students out of which about 4,000 are equivalent full-time students (EFTS), WelTec sees an employer satisfaction rate of 93%. It was awarded a low-risk rating by the Tertiary Education Commission for its financial performance. The institute has 361 students employed in creative fields, 564 in health and social services, 380 in hospitality, 956 in engineering, 685 in construction and 1,059 in business and information technology. It welcomes students from across the globe with 1,416 Asian students, 596 students from European countries, 870 from the Pacific, 4946 from NZ European/Pakeha and 1483 New Zealand Maori students. They are educated by academic staff of 229 members and administrative staff of 35 members.
