Course Description

Program Description This three-year Ontario College Advanced Diploma program, delivered over two and one-half years, is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation of Canada (CDAC). Students practise primary oral healthcare in their roles as preventive specialists. As members of a self-regulated profession, dental hygienists are responsible to the College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario for their practice decisions. Program emphasis is on preparing graduates to function effectively within a collaborative relationship which includes the client, community and other healthcare providers. Students learn to provide dental hygiene care in a professional manner through a variety of learning experiences. Students participate in seminars, case presentations and community health practicums. Clinically, students progress from manikins to supervised provision of self-initiated comprehensive dental hygiene care for clients presenting with diverse and complicated oral health needs. Throughout the program, students acquire knowledge which allows them to experience the role of the dental hygienist as researcher, advocate, educator, administrator, clinician and health promoter. Algonquin’s Introduction to Canadian Health Studies (ICHS) is designed to help international students integrate into the Canadian context in health studies, be more successful in their program, as well as their future employment. This introduction is offered to students with a conditional acceptance to all health studies at Algonquin College, and will not address program-specific content. International applicants who meet the program eligibility requirements are required to complete preparatory courses (4-months in duration): Introduction to Canadian Health Studies (ICHS). Students who successfully complete the introduction will then proceed to their original health program of choice.
