Program Description As economic and cultural ties between countries continue to make our world smaller, the need to communicate as global citizens is becoming more important. Languages are instruments of discovery. The study of language facilitates communication as well as the understanding of broader cultural and historical contexts that influence the way we live. In Canada, the ability to communicate effectively in French (one of the country’s two official languages) is not only an asset but it can be a requirement for many careers. A written, spoken, and literary understanding of more than one language gives you a unique edge both personally and professionally. It is not necessary for you to be fluent in French prior to enrolment. Our classes are designed to facilitate language development for those at all skill levels as long as admission requirements are met. The academic and professional pursuit of History is the process of bringing the past to life. The study of History encompasses all aspects of human experience, from wars to celebrity culture, and is constantly evolving as our knowledge and perspectives advance. As a History student you will have the flexibility to pursue your own interests within the discipline and the ability to regularly collaborate with your professors due to our small class sizes. Our courses provide you with various approaches to the study of History and the necessary skills to analyze any issue within its historical context. You will examine historical topics from North America, Europe, Latin America, Africa and South Asia. NOTE: Almost all Lakehead University programs are designed with courses that require successful completion of a a Fall session prerequisite course. As a result, students who choose to begin their academic studies in the Winter session will find the course selection extremely limited and will be restricted to attending on a part-time basis until the following Fall academic session. Most study permits require that the applicant is a full-time student. Because of this, It is recommended that students apply for a September start.
