Course Description

Program Description This one- year Ontario College Graduate Certificate Program provides students with knowledge of the organizational structures within the retirement community industry and various philosophies of care in preparation for careers as managers and administrators or pursue other opportunities. Retirement Community Management involves a broad range of responsibilities in the day-to-day operations including human resources, recruitment, fiscal management, resident care, food service operations, marketing, recreation activities and environmental services. The program includes current federal, provincial and municipal laws and statutes central to the success of this expanding industry. Students apply management principles specific to all departments in retirement communities through a variety of activities, case studies and a field placement. Students plan, implement and execute fiscal and operational strategies to optimize organizational efficiency. Focus also includes knowledge of resident care best practices relevant to the continuum of care and resident satisfaction. This program has been specifically designed to align with the Retirement Home Act of Ontario and prepares experienced managers and administrators for advancement in retirement community management or individuals seeking a dynamic career in an expanding sector. Graduates may find employment in the retirement communities industry or pursue opportunities in related fields, such as marketing, food and beverage and administration.

Students develop their knowledge of national and international regulatory frameworks with a focus on compliance within radiation protection procedures. Students quantify and qualify radiation hazards in order to provide control, guidance and information to personnel that minimize radiation exposure and control contamination. Students gain theoretical and practical understanding of nuclear operations fundamentals and develop significant skills in radiation protection, environmental radioactivity, instrumentation and techniques such as in the use of radiation detection equipment, waste management, contamination and decontamination procedures, and incident assessments that maximize safety procedures and systems.
