Course Description

The media environment is rapidly changing and evolving. The skills associated with journalism continue to be highly valuable, but not just for traditional media outlets anymore. Increasingly all industries, corporations and organizations rely on digital media for their communications and marketing needs. Content creators push their content to where their digital audiences are, such as Instagram, Snapchat and other social media platforms. But with an overload of content, how we do we strategically use these new technologies to share news and content of all kinds with audiences? Our Digital Media and Journalism program will provide you with the critical thinking and technical skills you’ll need to work in the fast-paced and fast-changing world of media. Your comprehensive education in journalism, public relations and digital and social media will prepare you for a career as a digital media professional in a competitive environment where credible news outlets and organizations of all kinds fight for visibility in our media-saturated world. When you graduate, you’ll be able to produce professional quality digital content, tell compelling stories and harness the power of digital and social media. You will also understand the broader social, political, cultural and economic issues shaping today’s media environments helping you to generate the kinds of compelling content that make for a responsible, balanced and memorable media experience. Your technical media production skills will be developed in courses delivered by Conestoga College at Laurier. After only four years, you will graduate with both an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Digital Media and Journalism and a graduate certificate in Contemporary Media Arts from Conestoga College.

All practical classes are taught in the Algonquin Centre for Construction Excellence (ACCE) facility. ACCE is fully outfitted with up-to-date equipment and tools allowing Algonquin to teach both traditional, as well as advanced technology used in today`s construction industry. This program is delivered over three consecutive levels. In Level 01, students learn the basics of drafting, geometric designs and construction of roofs and arches, computer applications, construction safety and building structures.
