Course Description

Program Description This two-year Ontario College Diploma program is accredited and endorsed by the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop employability skills for a successful career in the fast-growing tourism and travel industry by blending classroom theory with on the job training in Campus Travel; the on-campus travel service training facility. In addition, there is a two-week travel industry field placement. Students also benefit from tourism opportunities including mentoring, networking and exciting student travel activities. Program content reflects current trends of the tourism and travel industry. Subject matter includes marketing, social media, entrepreneurship, sustainability in tourism, niche and group travel, customized vacation planning, world tourism geography, sales and customer service excellence. There is an emphasis on the practical application of industry software experienced in our SMARTPOINT by TRAVELPORT lab. This software is used universally in the travel industry. Mandatory licensing is required in Ontario. Students write the Travel Industry Council of Ontario (TICO) exam. Students experience hands-on learning through a field placement in Level 04. Graduates are encouraged to apply to the Association of Canadian Travel Agencies (ACTA) to write the national certification examination to be accredited as a Certified Travel Counsellor (CTC) designation. Graduates can pursue employment opportunities in this fast-paced industry within the accommodations sector, travel service providers (agencies-retail and wholesale), transportation service providers (airlines, rail companies, automobile rental firms, bus operators and cruise lines), attractions, tour operators and government tourist offices.

The program includes current federal, provincial and municipal laws and statutes central to the success of this expanding industry. Students apply management principles specific to all departments in retirement communities through a variety of activities, case studies and a field placement. Students plan, implement and execute fiscal and operational strategies to optimize organizational efficiency. Focus also includes knowledge of resident care best practices relevant to the continuum of care and resident satisfaction.
