Course Description

Program Description Virtually everything we do takes place in social groups. Sociologists look at the relationship between individuals and the social and cultural contexts that frame their everyday lives. They raise important questions about the way we collectively think and act. In doing so, they make us more aware of social prejudices and make us more open-minded about difference. Sociology is the study of society. The sociological imagination is a strategy for understanding the relationships between the lived experiences of individuals and their social and historical context. There are two subfields within Sociology: Macro-sociology: the study of society as a whole, analyzes social systems and populations on a large scale. Micro-sociology: the study of small group and/or individual behaviour with an analytic focus on everyday interactions. Human social life is the particular focus of sociological inquiry. Sociologists study every aspect of our interactive lives like families, identities, genders, conformity, and deviance. They also study all of the institutions that we participate in, including religion, education, governance, health-care, family, and law. CBU offer diverse Sociology courses on family, religion, deviance, gender, education, identity, environment, the relationships between people and animals, classical and contemporary theory, and qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Small classes, taught by passionate faculty, give students the chance to leverage sociological research methods in their first year, including interviews, quantitative surveys and observations made in everyday settings. Sociology prepares students to do research in social settings, design and assess social policy, guide the implementation of programs and policies, and engage with various kinds of organizations. This program is a strong foundation for any career requiring an understanding of social issues and social-problem solving. Sociology also provokes social sensitivity, providing excellent preparation for work in our increasingly multicultural world. A Major in Sociology can be used as "teachables" for entry into education programs (some restrictions apply - students should check the requirements of the BEd programs at the universities they are interested in attending). Possible career paths include: Policy Analysis Social Work Education Sociology Research & Education Advertising Journalism Health Promotion Law Enforcement Management Consulting Public Relations Criminology Market Research Possible paths for post-grad include: Community Development Social Work Criminology Health Promotion Journalism Law
